City of Malibu Small Business Micro Grant Program
This program provides financial assistance to small businesses in Malibu that have experienced economic hardship due to recent natural disasters, helping them cover essential operational costs for recovery.
The City of Malibu has launched the Small Business Micro Stabilization Grant Program, a new funding initiative approved by the Malibu City Council during its April 28 meeting. This program is designed to provide direct financial relief to independently owned small businesses located within the Malibu city limits that have suffered financial hardship as a result of recent natural disasters. These include the devastating fires, severe winter storms, and extended closures of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), which have significantly disrupted the local economy. Funded through a $300,000 allocation from the City’s General Fund, the program offers one-time grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. These funds are intended to support eligible businesses in covering essential operational expenses necessary for recovery. Allowable uses for the grant funding include rent, payroll, utility bills, inventory replenishment, equipment repairs, marketing efforts, and other costs associated with business recovery and continuity. To qualify, applicants must meet several criteria. They must have a valid City of Malibu business license issued on or before December 1, 2024, or submit a statement of exemption. They must also be physically located within the Malibu City limits and provide a clear demonstration of financial hardship resulting from the disasters. Additionally, eligible businesses must offer a public benefit to the Malibu community and be in good standing with the city. Applications for the program are being accepted from May 1, 2025, through May 31, 2025. Interested applicants can submit their forms online at MalibuRebuilds.org/BusinessGrants or in person at Malibu City Hall located at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road. All submissions will be reviewed by the City's Administration and Finance Subcommittee. Final award decisions will be made by the Malibu City Council in June 2025. The initiative underscores the City’s commitment to revitalizing its local economy by supporting small businesses at a critical time. Mayor Marianne Riggins emphasized the importance of small businesses to the community, encouraging local support through shopping and dining in Malibu to aid in economic recovery. This grant program is one of several efforts aimed at fostering resilience and sustainability in the wake of recent disruptions.
