City of Detroit Neighborhood Beautification Program

The Neighborhood Beautification Program (NBP) provides grants to Detroit-based block clubs, neighborhood associations, nonprofit organizations, and faith-based groups to improve their communities. Funded with $4.75 million from the Neighborhood Improvement Fund and the American Rescue Plan Act, the program supports projects such as community gardens, public space improvements, and clean-up activities. Grants range from $500 to $15,000 and can be used for projects on up to four vacant lots. Applicants must either own the lots or license them through the Detroit Land Bank Authority (DLBA). To be eligible, applicants must be a City-registered block club or neighborhood association or partner with one. Nonprofit organizations and faith-based groups must have 501(c)(3) status or a fiduciary partner, and LLCs must provide required organizational documentation. Proof of lot ownership or licensing is necessary, and only parcels zoned R1, R2, or R3 are eligible. Organizations may submit one application per round but may sponsor additional applications from partnered groups. Applications for the Spring 2025 cycle open on November 4, 2024, and close on December 13, 2024, at 5:00 PM. Submissions are reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis, and no documents will be accepted after the deadline. Required materials include a detailed budget, proof of lot ownership or licensing, a plot plan, and organizational documents, such as bylaws and financial statements for LLCs or nonprofits. NBP staff are available to support applicants during weekly office hours held Wednesdays (9 AM-11 AM) and Fridays (11 AM-1 PM). Informational sessions and recordings are also available online to help guide the application process. Additionally, applicants working with the DLBA can use the Lot Licensing Program to conduct clean-up activities if they do not own the necessary lots. Following the application submission, the due diligence period will run from January to April 2025, during which additional information may be requested. Final grant awards will be announced in May 2025.
