The Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) intends to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) entitled Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas FY24. The goals of this investment area are to deliver measurable and sustained benefits to people who live in rural or remote areas by funding replicable clean energy projects that lower energy costs, improve energy access and resilience, increase economic opportunity, and/or reduce environmental harm; demonstrate rural or remote energy system approaches using climate-resilient technologies, business structures that promote economic resilience, accessible and appropriate financing mechanisms, and/or best practices in community leadership and engagement, and workforce development; and build clean energy knowledge, capacity, and self-reliance in rural and remote parts of America. Funding will support materials, equipment, time, labor, and other resources to build clean energy projects in rural or remote communities and run other allowable activities as proposed (e.g., collaboration, outreach, and engagement with Tribes and stakeholders, or workforce development programs). This Notice of Intent (NOI or Notice) describes a preliminary plan that will evolve during the Notice of Funding Opportunity development process.

The "Carbon Capture, Removal, and Conversion Test Centers" grant from the U.S. Department of Energy aims to fund the establishment and expansion of test centers for developing and commercializing technologies that capture, remove, and convert carbon dioxide emissions from large sources like power plants and industrial facilities, in an effort to achieve a carbon-free power sector by 2035 and a net-zero greenhouse gas economy by 2050.

The U.S. Embassy, Baghdad / Bureau of NEA of the U.S. Department of State announces an open competition for organizations to submit applications to carry out a program to integrate solar energy to develop modern irrigation techniques. This project will aim to revolutionize irrigation in Iraq by introducing solar-powered drip irrigation systems. The project will consist of in-person or virtual training sessions and workshops for undergraduates and graduates specializing in agriculture and water resources management, entrepreneurs, and technical staff from the ministries of agriculture and water resources. The goal is to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to transition from traditional irrigation methods to more efficient, water-saving, and eco-friendly drip irrigation systems powered by solar energy.

The grant titled DE-FOA-0003426: RFI Microelectronics Energy Efficiency Scaling for 2 Decades (EES2) R Roadmap Public Feedback is a request by the U.S. Department of Energy for stakeholders to provide feedback on a roadmap for improving the energy efficiency of computing technologies over the next two decades, with responses due by September 30, 2024.

The Office of State and Community Energy Programs (SCEP) is issuing this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). Awards made under this FOA will be funded, in whole or in part, with funds appropriated by Section 50131 of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022, Assistance for Latest and Zero Building Energy Code Adoption. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) provides up to $1 billion for States and units of local government with the authority to adopt building energy codes to adopt and implement the latest building energy codes, zero energy building codes, or equivalent codes or standards. An energy code is one of several types of building codes that help contribute to the overall health, safety, efficiency, and long-term resilience of buildings. Energy codes can be adopted directly as a standalone code, such as the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), which is commonly adopted by States and local governments. Moreover, energy codes are also fundamental components of certain more broadly adopted building codes, including the International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC), which are referenced in the United States as parental codes. Energy codes are often described as a subset of these broader building codes, representing distinct chapters of the IBC and IRC alongside other commonly recognized provisions, such as those pertaining to structural, plumbing, or electrical requirements, and other basic aspects of building design and construction. Adoption and implementation of such codes supports the decarbonization of new and existing residential and commercial buildings. This opportunity assists eligible entities in further decarbonizing their buildings through the adoption of the latest national model building energy codes, zero energy codes, other codes that deliver equivalent or greater energy savings, including innovative approaches to decarbonize existing buildings through certain measurable and enforceable requirements. The IRA is unprecedented in its opportunity to support sustainable change at the State and local level with respect to advancing the energy efficiency of new, renovated, and existing buildings. DOE is particularly interested in supporting States and local governments in implementing local capacity building, multi-year investments in workforce and education, and long-term improvements in building energy codes through multi-cycle adoption and building performance standards (BPS). Building energy codes establish minimum levels of energy efficiency for new and existing residential and commercial buildings. Model energy codes, such as the 2021 IECC and ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2019, are developed and updated through national consensus processes. States and local governments ultimately implement building energy codes, which are handled through various adoption, compliance, and enforcement processes and can vary widely across the United States. Many States have consistently received funding through their State Energy Plan to support the adoption of traditional building energy codes. In addition to this competitive funding opportunity announcement a formal funding announcement was published on September 19, 2023 for States pursuing pre-approved code packages.

This funding opportunity is designed to support innovative research and development projects that improve the manufacturability and scalability of energy storage technologies for stationary applications, helping to reduce production costs and enhance the energy grid's resilience.

The "Critical Facility Energy Resilience (CiFER)" grant aims to fund the development and commercial deployment of innovative energy storage technologies, specifically at sites with identified resiliency needs, to enhance their progress towards commercialization.

Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) Smart Manufacturing and Recycling Tactics for States (SMART) The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) Smart Manufacturing and Recycling Tactics for States (SMART) funding opportunity announcement (FOA) will provide funding to support access to smart manufacturing technologies and high-performance computing resources for small- and medium-sized manufacturers by states and the recycling of batteries and battery-containing devices by states and units of local government.

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) intends to issue, on behalf of the Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO), a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) entitled Oceans of Opportunity: U.S. Wave Energy Open Water Testing. This FOA supports WPTOs efforts to advance the commercial readiness of wave energy technologies through open water testing and system validation at multiple scales, serving the broader goals of the Biden administration to achieve carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 and to deliver an equitable, clean energy future, and put the United States on a path to achieve net-zero emissions, economy-wide, by no later than 2050 to the benefit of all Americans. Topic Area 1 leverages wave energy technologies that provide power to distributed blue economy applications. Topic Area 2 aims to develop functional wave energy technologies for coastal and island stakeholders (may or may not be grid-connected). Topic Area 3 allows for maturing grid connected technologies that demonstrate reliable power generation direct to a utility. The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy’s (NE) mission is to advance nuclear energy science and technology to meet United States (U.S.) energy, environmental, and economic needs. NE has identified the following goals to address challenges in the nuclear energy sector, to help realize the potential of advanced technology, and to leverage the unique role of the Government in spurring innovation: 1. Enable continued operation of existing U.S. nuclear reactors. 2. Enable deployment of advanced nuclear reactors. 3. Develop advanced nuclear fuel cycles and spent nuclear fuel management options. NE strives to promote integrated and collaborative research conducted by national laboratory, university, industry, and international partners under the direction of NE’s programs, and to deploy innovative nuclear energy technologies to the market and to optimize the benefits of nuclear energy. The explanatory statement accompanying Division D of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 reads as follows: “Section 311 of the agreement provides up to $100,000,000 to implement a new nuclear safety training program. The Department is directed to make one or more cost-shared awards not later than 180 days after enactment of this Act. The program shall require cost share of at least 50 percent of the total program costs. The cost share must come from nonfederal sources unless otherwise allowed by law. In implementing the program, the Department shall give priority to universities located within 50 miles of reactors that were constructed prior to 1980 and have had significant safety issues in the last five decades. A successful applicant shall have clearly defined goals and objectives; identify and address the gap between available skilled workers and the demand for the training program; and lead to an industry recognized nuclear reactor safety credential to meet demand.” This Request for Information (RFI)/Notice of Intent (NOI) is used solely for information capture and planning purposes and does not constitute a DOE solicitation, nor does it relate to any current solicitation. This RFI/NOI is issued with the intent of obtaining information and informing the community of NE’s anticipation to issue a future solicitation.
